Pick up at your accomodation and departure to Caltagirone.
The city has been long famous for the production of pottery, particularly maiolica and terra-cotta wares. Like most of the cities of the eastern Sicily also Caltagirone was almost completely destroyed by the earthquake of 1693. Many public and private buildings have then been reconstructed in Baroque style.
An expert tour guide will show you the Pottery Museum with a collection of ancient and modern pottery and terra-cotta, dating back to the Magna Grecia period.
You will walk through the narrow streets of the historical center and discover many little churches in different styles, from gothic to baroque. In the central square you will admire the “Scalinata di S.Maria del Monte” a staircase with 142 steps decorated with pottery which reveals the styles of different periods, from ancient times to the present day. During
the visit you will have the opportunity to see a demonstration of pottery in one of the laboratory in the town to understand how this material is worked by local people.
